Office vs. Seinfeld

Posted by jaybirdms on May 16, 2008

Found an interesting link on The Sports Point blog this morning.  It was a link to a post on “Why Don’t We Get Drunk and Blog” about which show is funnier, The Office or Seinfeld

Personally, I am a Seinfeld addict.  Love the show, have all the seasons on DVD, regularly quote stuff from the show in my daily life.  You know, everything necessary to be a total loser.  I’ve just started watching The Office, and I must say that I love it.  It’s really just another American version of a successful British show, but it is great.  I’m sure those DVD’s will find their way to my house as they become available.

Maybe other states won’t follow California’s lead

Posted by jaybirdms on May 15, 2008

The CA Supreme court has decided that gay marriage is ok.  Here’s the story from Yahoo.  This is a sad day in the life of our country, especially when you consider the opening sentence of the story.

The California Supreme Court has overturned a voter-approved ban on gay marriage.

So not only is the California Supreme Court going against God’s plan for marriage, they are going against what the voters of their own state said through a state-wide election.

That’s just Manny being Manny

Posted by jaybirdms on May 15, 2008

You’ve got to admit that Manny Ramirez just loves playing the game of baseball.  He’s had his share of attention over the past few years, both good and bad.  This play from mlb.com pretty much sums up how much fun he has while playing baseball.

Makes a nice catch, gives a high-five to a Boston fan, wheels around to make a good throw that allows the infield to double-up the runner, then jogs off the field with a big smile on his face.  Gotta love it.  This begs another question.  Why are there so many Boston fans at a game at a Baltimore Orioles home game?

BTW, the Orioles beat the Red Sox 6-3.

Update: I noticed that this same video has been taken down from YouTube.  The link above will take you to the video posted on the MLB web site.  So maybe they won’t throw me in jail, since I’m giving them the credit.  Of course, they prolly won’t even notice my blog out of the billion or so that are out there, anyway.

Childers wins special election; Davis vows to fight on

Posted by jaybirdms on May 14, 2008

Travis Childers won the special election run-off for Mississippi’s1st district seat in the US House.  It was a hard-fought, mud-slinging campaign for the seat that many voters had become tired of.  Childers says he is a conservative democrat.  Let’s see how he does when he gets to Washington.

Meanwhile, Greg Davis is committed to campaigning hard for the regular election in November.  No doubt, he will be taking notes on what Childers does during these few months in DC.

One other thing about this, last night on CNN, Donna Brazile talked about how the Republican’s negative campaigning did not work in this election.  Indeed it did not work.  However, I probably noticed more negative advertising on the part of the democratic party.  So I guess their negative ads did work.

Talk about a good day at the ballpark…

Posted by jaybirdms on May 13, 2008

Asdrubal Cabrera of the Cleveland Indians had one of heck of a day on Monday.  Not only did he hit a home run in the first game against the Toronto Blue Jays, but he turned an unassisted triple play in the second.  Only the 14th one ever in MLB history.  It wasn’t quite enough, though.  The Indians still lost the game, 3-0, after winning the first game by the same score.

Time to vote…again

Posted by jaybirdms on May 13, 2008

Today, we will have a winner in the special election to fill Mississippi’s 1st district seat in the US House.  If you have become sick and tired of the relentless attack of political ads, you’re not the only one.  But get ready for more mud-slinging.

Either Greg Davis or Travis Childers will emerge today to complete the current term.  They are also facing off in the November election for the next two-year term.   Expect the loser from today to campaign heavily while the winner is away in Washington.

“I was just trying to cut out the carbs, officer”

Posted by jaybirdms on May 12, 2008

We’ve all wanted to help out a friend who was being questioned by police, right?  This guy wound up getting himself in trouble by throwing M & M’s at the police a police officer.  Read this interesting (stupid) story here.  Maybe he thought the police officer needed to put on a little weight.  Of course we all know that’s why donuts were invented.

Pranks on the TNT set…

Posted by jaybirdms on May 9, 2008

I don’t watch a lot of the NBA, but whenever I can catch Charles Barkley, I have to stop and watch.  You just know he’s gonna say something funny.  Well, this was hilarious, but it was because Ernie Johnson decided to play a little prank on the big fella.  Check this out from Awful Announcing.

Ever wanted to take the Wonderlic test?

Posted by jaybirdms on May 6, 2008

Now’s your chance.  Here’s a sample test.  You’ve got five minutes to answer the questions.  See what your score would be.  I answered all of the easy ones before I went back to answer the tougher ones.  I scored a 40.  I answered 2 questions wrong, and there were 2 questions that I did not answer because I ran out of time.

If you like, let me know what you score.

Favre has retired, and so has his jersey…

Posted by jaybirdms on May 6, 2008

The boy in Connecticut who has been wearing his No. 4 Brett Favre jersey for more than 4 years has finally decided to take it off.  I doubt if Aaron Rodgers will have the same type of dedicated fan.

A nice story

Posted by jaybirdms on May 6, 2008

Albert Mohler has a good post about the governor of Alaska recently giving birth to a baby with Down’s Syndrome.  Even though she struggled with the diagnosis, she never gave thought to terminating the pregnancy.  He also has a link to the official AP story.  I’m not gonna argue pro-life or pro-choice here, but he makes a couple of interesting points.

Modern diagnostic tests are driving a “search and destroy mission” to eliminate babies judged to be inferior, disabled, or deformed. Some experts now believe that up to 90 percent of all pregnancies diagnosed as having a likelihood of Down syndrome end in abortion.

Also:

Some ethicists now go so far as to argue for a “duty” to abort a baby with a Down diagnosis.

What a scary society that we live in.  People who choose to abort a baby because he/she will be “too much trouble” to raise.  I am glad the Governor of Alaska set an example for everyone to follow.

A great Kentucky Derby marred by PETA (updated)

Posted by jaybirdms on May 5, 2008

What was a great Kentucky Derby race on Saturday finished on a sad note because the 2nd place finisher, Eight Belles, had to be euthanized after breaking both of her front ankles right after crossing the finish line.

Well, now PETA has decided to stick its ugly nose in the situation.  I’m not surprised, but I am definitely appalled.  From what I can tell, nearly all horse owners, trainers, and jockeys always do what is best for the animal.  Granted, I am not a horse racing insider, but it just seems that all of those involved with these horses understand them amazingly well.  They know the best course of action to take.  PETA needs to move on from this.

UPDATE:  The trainer for Eight Belles defends the jockey and some more insight into horse racing from ESPN.  The article gives some more in-depth information for those of us who don’t follow the sport on a regular basis.

No playoff for Division 1-A

Posted by jaybirdms on May 1, 2008

Imagine that.  I guess they are making enough money with all of the bowl games and the 5 BCS games.  Never mind that an 8-team or even a 4-team playoff would generate just as much money, if not more.  Here’s the story.

After reading the story, I understand that they want the regular season to still mean something.  It should.  But you can’t tell me that nobody would watch the regular season games, just because they add a playoff round.  Make it 4 teams.  Keep the bowls.  A bowl win still means something to the schools, players, and fans.  You can use the BCS standings to determine the four teams.  Let the Orange, Sugar, Fiesta, and Rose alternate between hosting the two semifinal games from year to year.  Then, you still have the BCS national championship game in place to be the final game.

There.  That’s the solution.  See how easy that was.

Former DNC Chairman wants Dems to unite

Posted by jaybirdms on May 1, 2008

Joe Andrew, who was the DNC Chairman during the last years of Bill Clinton’s presidency, has endorsed Barak Obama.  He says the Democrats need to unite behind Obama.  What he says:

I am convinced that the primary process has devolved to the point that it’s now bad for the Democratic Party.

Well, the democratic party has been the poster child for unorganized chaos (redundant, but accurate) since the 2000 presidential election.  This primary season has been the perfect example of what’s wrong with the Democratic party.  It’s time to pick a nominee and go with him/her.

And this is a surprise?

Posted by jaybirdms on April 24, 2008

The title of this article on Baptist Press caught my attention:  “Unchurched less likely to come to church

Needless to say, it was kind of a “duh” moment there.  The article goes deeper than just that, and the title is a little misleading, if you ask me.  The article speaks of unchurched people visiting a church versus people who are looking for a new church.  It talks about reaching out to the unchurched folks and getting them to attend, because many visitors that you see at church may simply be Christians looking for a new church home.

Davis, Childers to meet again

Posted by jaybirdms on April 23, 2008

Following Tuesday’s special election to decide who will fill the US House seat vacated by Roger Wicker, we still don’t have a winner.  Greg Davis and Travis Childers will meet in a runoff on May 13.  See the results here from the Daily Journal

I have a question about yesterday’s election.  Why did some people vote for Glenn McCullough and Steve Holland?  Both stated publicly that they did not want the position.  There were also notices posted at the precincts stating that the two candidates would not serve, even if elected.  Are people just being difficult, or are they just stupid?

Today is Earth Day

Posted by jaybirdms on April 22, 2008

Go hug a tree.

Just kidding, of course.  I admit that I could probably do more to help the environment.  I recycle newspaper, cardboard boxes, and plastic bottles.  I’ve even got a few CFL bulbs in my house.  Not sure if I’ll ever do more than that, but maybe I’m making a small difference.

More on Scotty Hopson…

Posted by jaybirdms on April 21, 2008

The truth is finally revealed!!!  I guess.  A story by Kevin Armstrong of SI.com tells of the Scotty Hopson saga.  As much as I wanted to see him play at MSU, he will probably be looking to play for one year, and then move to the NBA.  In the long run, State will probably be better off with Dee Bost and Romero Osby.

This is just plain awesome…

Posted by jaybirdms on April 21, 2008

I don’t watch the NBA very much at all, but I do know that LeBron James is one of the best in the business right now.  When this happened, I didn’t think very much about it.  But it gets better every time I watch it.
